Cars crushed after Enderby resident fails to tax them

Posted on July 11, 2013July 12, 2013 by staff

DSC_2068v2An Enderby resident has had two cars crushed due to them not being taxed.

The vehicles were removed from the public highway outside the resident’s house by Blaby District Council on Tuesday June 11.

One car had not been taxed since August 2008 and had a tax disc registered to another vehicle displayed in its window.

Both cars were crushed at Wigston Car Breakers on Thursday July 11.

Councillor Guy Jackson, portfolio holder for Regulatory and Neighbourhood Services said:

“The council has received numerous complaints about untaxed vehicles, and several have been taken away and disposed of.

“Untaxed vehicles are illegal and cause a nuisance to other motorists. It’s important to keep your tax up-to-date and failure to so could result in you losing your vehicle.”

Vehicles are taken to the council pound where they will be held until a registered keeper contacts the council to claim them.

There is a fine of £260 for every vehicle removed, put in place by the DVLA, and this includes a £160 deposit for a valid tax disc.

There is a further charge of £100 if the vehicle is not claimed for a second day, followed by £21 per day there after. If the vehicles remain unclaimed the council waits for the go ahead from the DVLA to crush them.

The council has two authorised officers working for the DVLA with the powers to remove these vehicles. Any vehicle found untaxed and parked on the highway will be removed.

If a vehicle has a SORN (registered as being off the road), it will also be removed if parked on the highway rather than the owner’s property.
