BMX Nationals in Huncote back on track

Posted on August 28, 2018August 28, 2018 by staff

After a postponement due to the early spring rainfall, Leicester Huncote Hornets, the BMX club based at Blaby District Council’s Pavilion Leisure Centre, will host the final rounds of the British Cycling National BMX Race Series.

The wettest March in Leicestershire since 1947 left the areas surrounding the Hornets’ track waterlogged and forced the team to reschedule their hosting of the championship series at their state-of-the-art, £150,000 BMX track.

Final rounds take place on 28-30 September 2018, with over 900 competitors and 3,000 spectators expected to visit the District of Blaby for the weekend.

Riders aged from 6 years old, to World Championship and Olympic-standard will be competing.

British Cycling will livestream each round to an audience of over 100,000 people, with the track and Pavilion Leisure Centre taking centre stage as host to the competition and visitors to the area.

Entry to spectate over the course of the weekend is FREE for all ages.

Mitch Barsby, Director at Leicester Huncote Hornets, said: “After months of planning the weather let us down forcing our postponement. However, thanks to a fantastic summer we are back on track and confident of a superb weekend of action.

“In a strange way it has worked out well for us. We’re now able to host the two most prestigious rounds of the championships as the top riders battle for their national titles. The eyes of all BMX enthusiasts will be on Huncote for the weekend!”

Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Regulatory Services, said: “The work put in by all at the Huncote Hornets has been incredible and despite the disappointment of the March rain, their organisation and planning has continued to be meticulous.

“This is an incredible opportunity for both the Hornets and boosting tourism to the district and the local economy, and we are looking forward to a brilliant weekend of action.”

The event is being funded entirely by the Huncote Hornets with sponsorship from local businesses and the support of Blaby District Council.
