Blaby’s sporting heroes celebrated at awards show

Sports stars, volunteers and coaches were honoured at an awards evening to celebrate sporting achievement in Blaby district last week.

The ceremony, organised by the Blaby District Local Sports Alliance, was held at Brockington College on November 16 and saw eight teams and individuals take home medals in seven different categories including sports person of the year, team of the year and an award for special recognition.

Cosby cyclist Lucy Garner was named Sports Person of the Year after her spectacular gold medal triumph in the junior world championships in Denmark this year.

Winners included England youth team fly fisher Alex Waddington, record-breaking archer Lizzie Warner,Badgerbrook Primary School’s county championship winning Under 11 rugby team and Bob King, who has volunteered as secretary of Saffron Dynamo Football Club in Whetstone since 1969.

Councillor David Jennings, portfolio holder for health and community services said:

“We have some fantastic sports men and women, young and old, achieving great successes in our district so it’s important that we recognise them and the people behind the scenes that work hard to make everything happen.”

The awards were hosted by Gaynor Nash, regional legacy co-ordinator for the 2012 Olympics.

Claire Jarvis, sport and recreation development officer at Blaby District Council said:

“The evening was a great opportunity to promote achievement by all kinds of groups and individuals from across the district and show what a positive impact physical activity can have in our community.”

Blaby’s local sports alliance is made up of the Learning South Leicestershire School Sport Partnership, Leicestershire & Rutland NHS, Community Action Partnership, leisure centres, and sports clubs as well as a representation from Leicestershire and Rutland Sport.
