Next, it’s an Olympic scarf…

Fans wanting to support Britain’s Olympic athletes this summer will be able to to so by ‘showing their  colours’ thanks to a local fashion business

The Leicester Mercury reported that Enderby based retail chain NEXT has launched a scarf featuring the Union Flag for the 2012 London Games.

It will be for sale online and then in stores from May according to the report.

Next hoped it would emulate the success of the 4.3 million red mittens sold by organisers of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The initial run of 500,000 will be produced in India, with any subsequent orders manufactured in Turkey and Portugal.

Andy Hunt, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, told the Mercury:

“Here is an item you can take to show you have gone out and supported the team.”

The scarves, costing £5 to £10, are covered with miniature icons representing Olympic sports and aspects of British life,  such as red telephone boxes and double-decker buses.

Next is also supplying suits for British athletes, plus furnishings and linen for their Games accommodation.
